Conventions of the thriller genre

i am going to look into the conventions of the thriller genre to give me some background research for the thriller opening and the type of things that might be expected to be included in it. this will help to understand the genre more and give me a deeper understanding of the conventions found within a thriller.

·         Quick, choppy camera angle changes
·         Music that is dramatic and builds tension
·         Strong lighting and the use of darkness and shadow
·         A lot of quick paced action to keep it interesting and buzzy
·         A feeling of hopelessness or desperation – looking like theres no way out
·         Dramatic irony – where the audience know more than the characters
·         Titling – dramatic build up before the movie even starts
·         Camera s shoot close and personal distance of the characters to create a feeling of involvement and make it feel like you are there, rather than watching form afar.
·         Props and symbols that set the scene and are common to thrillers – guns, weapons, police, time.

i found out a lot of information on setting the scene, such as dramatic music, strong lighting, personal distance shots, but didnt find a lot of information about the mis en scene or much about the themes and matter that are often covered. this will therefore help me understand about the modd that is set in thriller films, but i need to do some research, using analysis of thriller opening, to give me more understanding of some of the conventions. this will give me a deeper knowledge, and a more up to date one, as i feel as though alot of the cliche's here are quite outdated.
